About the organisation

Organisation name : Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum

Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum (BBGA), a unique and iconic regional Botanic Garden and Arboretum celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2024, is devoted entirely to native Australian flora. It holds a special place in both the story of the conservation of Australian native flora, and that of regional New South Wales.

Conceived in the 1930s, BBGA was finally established in 1964 after more than 30 years of lobbying by local farmer and founding father, George Althofer, supported by his brother Peter. At the time, the recognition of the importance of Australia’s flora both in terms of horticulture and conservation was not greatly developed. ‘It was collections and gardens like BBGA’s and the Australian National Botanic Garden’s that assisted to heighten the importance of Australian plants that has resulted in important collections in most of the major botanic gardens in Australia.’ George Althofer has been described as ‘óne of the pivotal people incorporating native plants in the psyche of Australian horticulture.’ BBGA is listed on both the National Trust Register and State Heritage Inventory.

The last decade has been a particularly challenging one for BBGA, with the reduction and then cessation of vital recurrent State Government funding, crippling and prolonged drought, COVID regulations hampering operations and visitor numbers, and damaging rain events. This “perfect storm” has left BBGA, and its finances, in a vulnerable state. To survive beyond its 60th year, BBGA now requires significant reinvigoration, and the investment to do that.

In the words of Tom North, Curator of the  National Seed Bank at the Australian National Botanic Gardens ‘Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum has such an important part to play in securing threatened species for long-term survival. It is one of the only botanic gardens west of the Great Divide that has the capacity and experience, but it needs support to do this work. I hope we’ll be able to visit it into the future, and not just see thriving populations of Small Purple Pea, but also other threatened plant species from western NSW.’

Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum is committed to continuing this important work but needs secure funding to ensure our survival, much like the plants we protect. We must secure it for the future - for our children, grandchildren and all who come after us.  To do otherwise is unthinkable.
